Congratulations to EDGE 2017, Tyler Stinson on his commitment to UMBC! Stinson, a product of Uxbridge minor lacrosse is currently a student at the Hill Academy (Ontario) where he trains under Brodie Merrill and his staff along with some of Ontario's top student athletes. Stinson, a 5'9, righty attack was drafted this year in the 2nd round (13th overall) in the 2015 Junior A Draft by the Whitby Warriors. Stinson, spent this past Jr season playing Jr.B for the Clarington Green Gaels (12GP, 16G, 14A) who finished the regular season with the best record in Jr.B. On the field, Tyler is an excellent all around player and dangerous offensive player. Utilizing his box experience and stick skills, Tyler thrives in the 2 man, pick and roll offense. Tyler can also attack the net in 1v1's, using his athleticism and toughness to get inside and finish. Tyler's success on the field translates in the classroom, as Tyler currently posses as a 90% Canadian Academic Average.

Tyler was also the 2014 recipient of the Jamieson Kuhlmann Award, which is awarded to the Midget player demonstrating high proficiency in Field Lacrosse combined with outstanding achievement in citizenship, together with high standards in academics or his/her chosen profession. Tyler was also recently selected to Team Ontario U18 field team that will be competing for a Canadian National Championship in Nova Scotia at the end of August, best of luck to Tyler and the rest of team Ontario!

We will enjoy following Tyler's progress and development this year at the Hill Academy! We had a chance to speak with Ty about his commitment and experience with Edge.

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

TS - I started playing box lacrosse when I was 9 years old for Uxbridge Minor and field when I was 13 for Newmarket Redbird’s.  This year I was drafted to the Whitby Warriors Junior A and will be the first time I will not play for my hometown.  I am also a student with The Hill Academy and hope to be part of Team Ontario U18 Field this year.

Why did you choose UMBC

TS - I chose UMBC because it felt like the right school for me.  Upon my first visit to UMBC I had a strong connection to the coaches (Zimmerman, Settembrino and Gallagher); it was easy for me to see myself being coached by them and as a team, the guys have great chemistry.  I also liked the size, location and easy access that the school had for me.

What are you looking forward to most at UMBC?

TS - Obviously it’s to play lacrosse and win a championship but I am also looking forward to the next step in my academic future.  I’m still keeping my options open as to what I want to major in and I know when I’m ready I’ll figure it out.

Future ambitions and goals beyond NCAA lax?

TS - I can always see lacrosse as being a part of my life and I hope to one day play lacrosse at a professional level.  Outside of lacrosse, I’m keeping my options open.

When did you join Edge? Can you tell us about your experience in the program?

TS - I joined Edge in 2013; I was late in joining the team and the new kid to the team so it took some time to fit in but I can honestly say that playing with the Edge boys has really expanded my circle of friends.  Edge brings together the best of the best and I’m very appreciative for all their support and guidance.

Any future advice for Edge members?

TS - My advice would be; hard work and dedication both on the field and in the classroom.

Favorite memory with Edge?

TS - The spring/summer of 2014 and winning the NSCLA Championships that year!  The Edge 2017 team was a super group of talented players and it was an honour to play with these guys.  Many of them played with me during Team Ontario Nationals in Edmonton that summer and I will always look back on that summer as a powerful and memorable year.

Any shoutouts, special thanks?

TS - I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the support and encouragement from my parents; they have always been there for me.  The coaches and teachers at The Hill Academy for the many lessons they have taught me on how to be a student athlete and for preparing me for this next chapter in my life.   Also, thank you to Stu and Alan for allowing me to play with Edge and to Coach Donville and Coach Gardner for being great coaches.
