Congrats to EDGE 2019 defenseman, Zachary Young on his verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina!

The product of Clarington minor lacrosse is one of the top long poles in Ontario and the class of 2019. Zachary is currently enrolled at the Hill Academy, the #1 prep lacrosse program in North America. Since starting at the Hill in September,  Zachary has seen rapid improvement and development in large part thanks to Brodie Merrill and their on field training along with their strength and conditioning program.

Already, 6'3, 190 lbs, Zachary is an imposing player on the field, capable of shutting down top offensive middies or attackmen. His size, strength and excellent stick make it difficult for opponents to find any success creating space or getting free. In the box, Zachary is a tough and athletic player who can impact a game with his defense and transition. Zachary was part of the Clarington Gaels Bantam team that won the OLA 'A' Final 6 Championships in 2014.

With EDGE, Zachary has excelled in every regard, an honour roll student in the classroom and an impact player on the field, Zachary has all the tools and potential to be a great player at the next level. Zachary has helped the EDGE 2019 team win NSCLA Championships in 2014 and 2015 and received a number of write-ups and nominations for his play

Zachary becomes our 5th recruit in the class of 2019 and we look forward to watching his continued development over the years with the Hill Academy and Gaels, congrats Zach!

We had a chance to catch up with Zachary and his experience with EDGE:

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?
ZY - I started playing lacrosse in my Novice year with the Clarington Gaels. I am now in my Midget year with the Gaels and play on the JV team at The Hill Academy.

Why did you choose UNC?
ZY -
I attended a prospect camp at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and I knew right away it was the perfect school for me.  Great coaching staff,  lots of academic choices, unbelievable lacrosse team.

What are you looking forward to most at UNC?‎
ZY -
Playing against the best teams in NCAA lacrosse and being a student athlete at UNC.

Future ambitions and goals beyond NCAA lax
ZY - I would like to attend the Business School at UNC. Working on Wall Street or Bay Street would be great. Hopefully I have a chance to play NLL and MLL after University.

When did you join Edge? Can you tell us about your experience in the program?
ZY -
I joined Edge Lacrosse two years ago. We have an awesome team and many of my close  Edge friends are verbally committing to great schools and I expect many more will soon. It will be cool to play against my friends down the road in NCAA lacrosse.

Any future advice for Edge members ?
ZY - Really focus on personal training and being the best you can be on the field and in the classroom. Be a team player and keep your grades high.  Also, don't underestimate the importance of box lacrosse skills to USA coaches, every school will tell you that is why they like recruiting Canadian players .

Favorite memory with Edge?
ZY -
Winning a lot of big tournaments in the USA and playing great teams like the Baltimore area Crabs.  Playing at schools like Boy's Latin was unreal too.

Who did you look up to growing up?‎
ZY -
Growing up close to Whitby I get to watch great players like Shawn Williams, Riley O’Connor and Danny Lintner.

Any shoutouts, special thanks?
ZY -To The Hill Academy Coaches and my teammates as I am learning so much everyday. ‎ All three  McCrory Coaches,  Coach Kearnan, and Coach Williams for believing I have a chance to play at the next level.  A special shout-out to Jill Haigh and The Edge program. My parents.
