Congratulations to Eric Gold (Edge 2013) on his commitment to attend Canisius College

Congratulations to Eric Gold (Edge 2013) on his commitment to attend Canisius College!  Eric was with the Edge program for 3 years (2010-2013) and developed into a very versitle midfielder who has the ability to put the ball in the net while also getting back and playing solid defense.  The 6'0, 170lbs, midfielder from Keswick, Ontario, began his lacrosse career in 2003 with the Newmarket Minor Lacrosse Organization.  Gold is currently playing at Kiski Prep school in Saltsburg Pennsylvania along with the Newmarket Saints Junior B team during the summer.  We would like to wish Eric the best of luck at Canisius both in the classroom and on the field and have no doubt that he will be intrumental in their midfield!

We had a chance to catch up with Eric.

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enroled/playing?

I began my lacrosse career for the Newmarket Redbirds in 2003 and continued to play in the organization until 2011. I am currently playing for Kiski Prep in Saltsburg Pennsylvania and the Newmarket Saints Junior B team.

Why did you choose to attend Canisius?

Canisius seem to be the best fit academically as well as being close to home.  The lacrosse team is taking steps in the right direction to win the MAAC championship.

What are you looking forward to most at  Canisius??

I am looking forward to furthering my education and playing division 1 lacrosse under the coach of team Canada’s Field lacrosse team, Coach Mearns.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

I would like to see how far I can take my lacrosse career but also like to become a teacher and lacrosse/hockey coach as well.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I joined the Edge program in 2010 and I really enjoyed my time on and off the field. Edge gave me the chance to showcase my skills to US colleges and I have learned lots of valuable knowledge about the game of lacrosse.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

Keep your academic marks up. Coaches only have so much athletic aid so the academic aid really helps to make it affordable.  Make sure the school is the right fit for you.  Take your time to find out if the school has the major you want to take and it is the right setting.  You have to spend 4+ years there and you want to have a good time.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

Favourite memory with Edge is the Gait Cup tournament especially spending time with the boys in the dorms and playing lax. Edge gave me an opportunity meet and play with some great lacrosse players from other areas of Ontario.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

To describe myself as a lacrosse player, I would say I am versatile, I played midfielder for many years but have played attack since attending prep school in the States. When I was growing up I looked up to Colin Doyle and wanted to be a leader like him.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks

I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of my academic and lacrosse paths throughout my life. A special thanks to my family, my teachers, and all of my coaches growing up in box, field, school, and Edge!
