CONGRATS TO JAKE GILMOUR ON HIS COMMITMENT TO ST.LEOS UNIVERSITY!

Congrats to Edge 2015 - Jake Gilmour (Pickering, ON) on his commitment to St.Leo's Unviersity (FL) for September 2014!

Jake Gilmour is a tall lefty attack/midfielder with a great stick and finishing ability around the net. (Recent highlight video) Jake will have an opportunity to step in this year and hopefully help St.Leo's in 2014! We wish Jake and Edge teammate, Zach Lysyk the best of luck at St.Leo's this year!

Jake was recently featured in an article in the Pickering/Ajax newspaper

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

JG - I started Lacrosse at 5 years old and played for West Durham Rock. In 2013 I played in the CLAX League for the Turf Dogs and also joined the Edge Lacrosse Program and I am now currently playing with the Jr B Ironheads.

Why did you choose to attend ST Leo’s?
JG - My family and I visited a total of 5 schools, 4 being D1 and St Leo’s being the only D11. All of the schools had a lot to offer as far as education and of course lacrosse BUT after my St Leo visit it felt right and I knew that they wanted me and thought that I could make an immediate impact on the field. Although my education is my main focus, and St Leo’s has an amazing history program, playing lacrosse is my Passion (the location means always) and to go to a school and sit on the bench would not be good for me or my character. I want to play and I want to make a difference. Also I immediately liked the coaches and their passion for lacrosse.

What are you looking forward to most at St Leo’s?

JG - I am most looking forward to the NCAA experience, being part of this team and having it be a team  that I feel  a part of right away. I stayed with some of the “guys” on my visit and attended a conference final. There is no doubt in my mind that this is going to be the experience of a lifetime for me.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

I hope to earn a degree in history at St Leo’s, Play in the NLL and eventually be a History teacher (professor) and a Lacrosse coach.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

JG - I joined the program in spring 2013. I made a deal with my parents that if they were willing to enroll me that I would promise to maintain a 75 % average and have been on the honor roll ever since. The fact that Edge stays on top of your scholastics made me work even harder.

I got an e-mail after my midget provincials from Stu Brown inviting me to try out. My mum thought that it was just a group type did some investigating and now will tell anyone and everyone that it is the best decision we ever made as a family.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

JG - My advice is:Take it slow, realize that a lot of athletes are recruited for a few positions, Go with your gut when you visit a school and do not be afraid to ask questions, Do not get caught up in the D1,11,and 111 hype., Do what is best for you as an academic athlete and of course be realistic as far as money that you expect your parents to pay for your education. Enjoy the ride…Edge has been a GREAT experience for me and my entire family.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

JG - Starting my first Edge Game and getting a hat trick in the first quarter. Also meeting and hanging out with the other members of the team.

Growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?
JG- Stevie Toll then Jordan Wolf and Rob Parnell now

Any shout-outs, special thanks?

JG - I would like to thank first and foremost my brother for making me love the game and teaching me so much, my parents Vikki and Jamie for the countless hours and money that they have spent on my sports (I also played AA hockey up until this year).

As far as coaches, I have been coached by some of the best:
My dad
Kevin Robinson
Stu Brown
Marc Burton

I also have to thank Alan Tsang from Edge, he has been very supportive throughout my 4 seasons with Edge and has been an amazing advocate for me. Stu and Alan were (and continue) to be there for me and my family whenever we need them). I hope to become an ambassador for Edge at St Leo’s
