Edge Announcement - Conor Sharkey

Congratulations to Conor Sharkey (Edge 2015) on his commitment to attend Pfeiffer University for the fall of 2015!  The 5'11, 195lbs, Cambridge, Ontario native has been with the Edge program for the past two seasons and has developed into an exceptional goalie.  Conor is an all-round fundamentally sound goalie who can stop the big outside shots along with the in-tight ones.  Sharkey also has a great clearing ability and can handle the defensive pressure.  Sharkey first began playing box lacrosse for the Mississauga Tomahawks at the age of 3.  It wasn't until Conor was 13 that he had his first field experience with the Guelph Regals.  Sharkey is currently playing for the KW United along with Guelph Regals Junior B squad.  We would like to wish Conor the best of luck at Pfeiffer and have no doubt that he will be very successful both on the field and in the classroom!

We also had a chance to catch up with Conor.

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

I first began playing box lacrosse for the Mississauga Tomahawks when I was 3. My first field lacrosse experience was with the Guelph Regals when I was 13. Along with those teams and Edge, I have also played with the Cambridge Chiefs, KW United and Guelph Jr. B.

Why did you choose to attend Pfeiffer University?

I chose Pfeiffer because I felt like it was the perfect fit for me. The team is really close with one another and the fact that there are several Canadians on the teams makes it feel very familiar. I have also connected well with Coach Lange and the business program at Pfeiffer is very strong.

What are you looking forward to most at Pfeiffer?

Athletically, I am looking forward to competing against a high calibre opponent and contending for a spot in the NCAA Tournament every year. Academically, I am looking forward to receiving a great education that will help establish a solid career in the future.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

Although I don’t know what I want to do career-wise yet, I want to use the education that I receive during my 4 years of playing NCAA lacrosse to set me up for the next 40 years of my life. I also want to stay involved with the sport of lacrosse and help other Canadian players make it to the NCAA.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I first joined Edge in the fall of 2012 after seeing the success my teammate, Luke Henderson, was having with the program. My experience was nothing but positive. Edge provided me with exposure to NCAA coaches that I could not have received anywhere else.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

Put the same amount of effort you do on the field to what you do in the classroom. Your marks can determine whether or not you are able to attend your dream school.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My favourite memory while playing with Edge would definitely have to be making it to the finals at the NSCLA National Cup this past summer.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I consider myself a solid shot stopper of both outside shots and shots on top of the crease.  Another aspect I take pride in is my clearing ability, whether it is hitting a middie on a fast break, dumping it to one of my long poles or clearing the ball over half myself, I feel as though I do it efficiently and consistently.

Any shout-outs, special thanks?

I would like to thank all of my coaches – Marc Burton, Adam Lukanchoff, Adam Gardner & Shayne Jackson – along with the entire Edge program for providing me with all of the tools I needed in order to achieve my goals. I would also like to thank Sam Kosakowski, U of Guelph Head Coach, for introducing me to the great sport of field lacrosse. But most of all, I would like to thank my family, and more specifically my parents. They have been nothing but supportive of my goal of playing NCAA lacrosse. If not for them I would not be where I am today.
