Edge Announcement - Peyton Mooney

Congratulations to Peyton Mooney (Edge 2016) on his commitment to attend Brevard College.  The 5'10, 195lbs, Fergus, ON native has been with the Edge program for two years now and has grown into an exceptional goaltender. Mooney does a tremendous job controlling his rebounds, stopping the big outside shots along with the in tight ones.  Peyton also does a great job clearing the ball out of the defensive zone, whether it's making the long outlet pass or running it himself. Mooney is a product of the Centre Wellington Minor Lacrosse Association and is now currently enrolled at the Hill Academy. We would like to wish Peyton the best of luck at Brevard both in the classroom and on the field!

We had a chance to catch up with Peyton:

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

I originally started playing box lacrosse at the age of 6 for the Fergus Thistles. I later started playing field lacrosse at the age of 10 for the Centre Wellington Wolves as a long pole. I made the transition to goalie at the age of 14, and last year played for Edge lacrosse. I am now enrolled at and play for The Hill Academy.

Why did you choose to attend Brevard?

I chose to attend Brevard because of the unbelievable atmosphere on campus and the outstanding Wilderness Leadership program that they have to offer. Another factor to me choosing Brevard was the dedication of Coach Anderson and his staff to get out there and really recruit hard, as well as the large amount of Canadian players and very highly talented players he had acquired. I knew since the second that I started talking with Coach Anderson that he had what it takes to make this start up program into a national championship contender in no time. In general it was the absolute perfect all around fit for me.

What are you looking forward to most at Brevard??

I am really looking forward to getting on the field with the team and seeing where I fit in at the next level and getting the chance to prove myself to Coach Anderson and the coaching staff as well as my teammates. I am also really looking forward to starting the Wilderness Leadership program there.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

I want to become a guide in the northern parts of Ontario, either helping under privileged kids get out and experience the wild or opening up my own lodge and guiding service open to all.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

My experience with EDGE was an extremely good one. From the second I showed up at the first try-out I felt accepted into the EDGE family and knew that I was in the place I needed to be. I joined last year and played under Coach Adam Lukanchoff on the 2016 team. It was a great experience as a whole and I wouldn't be where I am right now without EDGE. I heard about the program from a few friends in CW who played for EDGE many years ago, but I was really drawn to EDGE at the 2012 Great Lakes Lacrosse Games which was put on by EDGE.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

I would just say to never give up. If you aren't getting any looks email all the coaches and schools that you think you would like to attend and email them all prior to your recruiting tournaments. Also make a highlight video, it's an easy way to catch the eye of many coaches at once and show them what you can do. But on top of all of that I would say to not get discouraged, everyone has their time and everyone does have a fit out there you just have to find it.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My favourite memory with EDGE was taking the Crabs to O.T. at Crab feast. Our only other meeting with them was the previous fall and got blown out. We came back to them with vengeance and was beating them after the first half, the half I played in. Then we took them to O.T. But unfortunately lost with a very small amount of time left. Even though we lost it was the best game I ever played in with EDGE and it was a very good bonding experience with the team.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I am a very tough and resilient player. Anyone I've ever played with will tell you that I soak more shots than just about any goalie out there and always do it with a big smile on my face. I always looked up to the late Chris Sanderson, his display of true insanity, playing with a badly injured leg, in the 2006 FIL World Championship really resonated with me even before I was a field goalie. Ever since that moment I've always wanted to be as tough as he was and can say that I am well on my way. Right now I would compare myself to Chris Sanderson. I constantly am saving the ball with my body and will do anything to keep the ball out of the back of my net, no matter how unorthodox and weird looking it may be, much like he did.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks.

I would like to say thank you to Coach Adam Lukanchoff and the entire EDGE organization for getting me to where I needed to be to get this great opportunity. I would like to thank My Centre Wellington coach Walter Woodland for the constant encouragement. I would also like to thank my Hill Academy coaches; Coach Merrick Thomson, Coach Brodie Merrill, Coach Patrick Merrill, and Coach Kyle Kallay for the opportunity to attend The Hill and once again give me this opportunity I have before me. Last, but not least, I would like to thank my family and especially my parents, Scott and Tracey, for the constant encouragement and for driving me all across the continent to give me this great opportunity.
