Congrats to Kyle Kolwich on his verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina! Kyle, a product of Oakville minor lacrosse is one of the top 2017 long pole recruits in Canada. EDGE Coach, Adam Lukanchoff had high praise for Kyle - 'Kyle is one of the best pure defenders I have had the opportunity to coach. He is not only tall and athletic, but he has great lacrosse IQ. Kyle has the ability to read to the field at all times and make some jaw dropping defensive plays and push the ball in transition. Kyle was a pleasure to coach and I can't wait to see what he can do for the Tar Heels.' Kyle also represented Team Ontario U16 at the 2014 Field Nationals where he was the Team Captain and helped secure the National Championship for Ontario!

Kyle was featured in the fall by 3dRising's Casey Vock - Kolwich is strong enough in all the relevant categories to make him arguably the most attractive Canadian defensive prospect in the 2017 class. He ís tall at 6-4, about 190 pounds, has great reach with long arms and legs, moves enough to appear nimble, uses his stick effectively by getting on hands and not committing to one direction more than another. He ís usually the first to a ground ball and just floats up the field. He came up with lots of groundballs to help keep Edge on offense, and he helped make scoring a daunting task. As mentioned already, his team allowed only two goals in each of three games. Kolwich typically started out on the opposition;s top attackmen and showed the ability to stay with all of them, showing strong positioning, great range with his stick up in the passing lanes and all over his man. Heís a bright kid and it shows on the turf as he helps lead an excellent overall defense. A lesser-known name prior to this summer, at the moment he is one of the hottest Canadian recruits - full article

We will enjoy following Kyle's career in the NCAA and look forward to his success with UNC!

Where did you start playing lacrosse? Where are you currently playing?

KK - I started playing lacrosse in Oakville when I was 5 years old.  I currently play for the Edge 2017 Team, Holy Trinity in Oakville, and most recently U18 Team Ontario.

Why did you choose North Carolina?

KK - I chose North Carolina because of the great opportunities it provides in both lacrosse and academics. UNC has excellent academic programs that will set me up for a  great career. Lacrosse- wise, I had a great connection with the coaches and loved the positive atmosphere and desire to achieve a national title. Growing up, UNC has been one of my favorite schools and going there has always been a dream of mine. Also, you can’t complain about the weather!

What are you looking forward to most at UNC?

KK - The lacrosse program is outstanding and I look forward to working for multiple national championships. UNC has an excellent business program and I plan to take advantage of all the opportunities that it provides.

Future Ambitions beyond NCAA Lacrosse?

KK - I would like to continue on with school by getting my MBA or get into engineering. I think that I will always be involved in lacrosse in some way, either playing pro or coaching because I love the game.

When did you join EDGE? can you share your experience?

KK - I started playing Edge in grade 6 when I was 11 years old. My experience with Edge has been amazing. Edge helped make playing in the NCAA realistic and made sure that we were focused on the importance of academics before lacrosse. Edge gave me the coaching and exposure that I needed to be successful. Through Edge I have also made many new friends from all over Canada and the U.S.

Any advice for future members?

KK - Put the time into being a good student as well as a good lacrosse player. A big part of the recruiting process is your academics. Show good character on and off the field as well.

Favourite memory with EDGE?

KK - My favorite memory with Edge was playing with the 2017 team last summer. It was very talented group of guys and we were very successful. In particular, we won the NSCLA championship and I ended up scoring the winning goal.

Who did you look up to, model your game after?

KK - Growing up playing defense in Canada, Brodie Merrill was somebody I looked up to. We are both bigger guys and like to create transition off of turnovers and loose balls.

Any special thanks, shout outs?

KK - I would like to thank all of my family, teammates and coaches who helped me get to where I am today. I would especially like to thank Coach Jason Donville who instilled the dream in me of playing D1 in the NCAA. Thanks coach for always believing in me and for helping me to become the player I am today. I would also like to thank Coach Adam Lukanchoff for all of his help in the last couple of seasons with coaching and his support in the recruiting process. Finally, I would like to thank Alan and Stu from Edge for all of their hard work. You were a huge help in making my dream become a reality.
